Trip Overview

A journey to Mount Kailash is the ultimate pilgrimage destination of Hindus, Jains, Buddhists and Bons. However, the 53 km long circle around Kailash is a feat that not everyone can achieve. If the fear of long travel days, and altitude sickness is holding you back from experiencing this sacred peak, then we bring to you our Mt. Kailash tour by helicopter- known to be the best route to Kailash.

Our Mt. Kailash tour by helicopter delivers active, and effortless acclimatization along with the opportunity to follow the ancient pilgrimage trail letting you experience its deep rooted spirit.

With minimal tourists presence, you can truly savor the sensation of being among the first to explore the area. It also allows you to finish your entire journey in under 2 weeks. On the other hand, any other overland or air route will require between 17 days to three weeks to complete the Kailash tour.

Following the route through the western and northwestern corners of Nepal, our Mt. Kailash tour by helicopter will take you to the 6638 m high pious mountain of Kailash. Perched in Ngari, western Tibet, the summit is considered a place of power.

Hindus believe the top of the Kailash is the abode of Mahadev/Shiva, a deity who personifies both destructive and creative principles. According to the Vishnu Purana, a Hindu religious text, the peak is a reflection of Mount Meru, the sacred cosmic mountain, the center of all material and spiritual universes.

Surprisingly, the peak has four prominent pyramidal walls facing the four directions. Each side is regarded as the face of Shiva himself and so he balances between the functions of creator, observer, and destroyer. For Hindus, making the pilgrimage and circumambulating Kailash (Parikrama) will reborn them in Shiva’s paradise.

On the other hand, Buddhists believe that four Buddhas, each with a magic vessel live on Kailash. For them also, encircling Kailash (Kora) from east to west offer them a path to liberation from all their sins, granting them rebirth in the higher realm of the Gods.

For this very reason, countless devotees from various faiths journey to Kailash each year, eager to circle the peak at least once in their lifetime. With a similar intention, we will also set off on our Mt. Kailash tour by helicopter and travel you by air to Simikot via Nepalgunj. Then a charter helicopter will fly you to Hilsa from where a road journey will take you to Lake Mansarovar.

Rising to 4600 m, this enchanting and sacred lake at the very base of Kailash takes the shape of a radiant sun. Its waters always clear and calm brims with life. On the other hand, the nearby Rakshas Tal always swells with fierce waves even in the absence of storms.

Based on Buddhism, the pious Mansarovar is where Buddha first entered this world while Hindu beliefs tell us that the lake sprang from the thoughts of Brahma.

Thus, cleansing with its holy water will erase all our sins, and conducting havans and pujas along its banks can liberate the soul from the endless cycle of birth and rebirth. Unlike other Kailash tours, we offer you the opportunity to circumnavigate around this enchanting lake.

As we continue our Mt. Kailash tour by helicopter, you will arrive in Darchen, the gateway to your sacred kora around the mountain. Here, you can gaze upon the majestic northern pyramidal face of Kailash, and spend your first night at Dirapuk.

On the second day, you will tackle the challenging Dolma La Pass, standing tall at 5,630 meters, before making your way to Zhutulpuk. The third day will see you retracing your steps back to Darchen, where your adventure concludes with a return journey to Taklakot and Hilsa.

You will then board a charter helicopter back to Simikot, followed by a domestic flight that will travel you back to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj.

We also like to emphasize that our Mt. Kailash tour by helicopter is not only for pilgrims but also for trekking and mountain lovers. The fairyland-like scenery around Kailash and Lake Mansarovar will really leave you in awe.

Ideal for all with standard level of fitness, our Mt. Kailash tour by helicopter is best to be undertaken during the dry spell from May through October.

Required Permits and Visa for Mt. Kailash tour by helicopter

For our Mt. Kailash tour by helicopter, there are two obligatory official documents we must have: the Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) and the Chinese Group Visa.

Additionally, because of Kailash’s exclusive position within the military zone of Ngari, we require three more permits: a Foreign Affairs Permit, a Military Permit, and an Alien Travel Permit.

We will take care of the Chinese Group Visa and the Tibet Travel Permit, while our Tibetan travel partner will manage the other permits, who will collect them, and keep them until we arrive in Tibet.

  •  TTP

The TTP, or Tibet Travel Permit, is the official authorizing paper provided by the Tourism Office of Tibet, allowing us to explore designated areas within Tibet.

After we collect your documents, we will send them to our local Tibetan travel partner, along with the details of all our participants and our itinerary, which includes accommodations and the tour’s start and end dates.

Once the permit is approved, alterations to your travel plans will not be permitted. We will also receive an official invitation letter, which is mandatory for obtaining a Group Visa from the Chinese Embassy.

You can expect the processing of the Tibet Travel Permit to take about 10 to 15 office days, and our Tibetan guide will keep it safe during our travels.

  • Chinese Group Visa

The Chinese Group Visa requires arriving in Kathmandu 2-3 full days before starting your trip to Tibet. You also need to be present in the Embassy and give your original passports and fingerprints for validation.

On the next working day, you will receive your passport back with visas. The embassy accepts and issues documents on weekdays from 9 am to 12 pm. The day and time of your Kathmandu arrival should therefore be planned accordingly.

When it comes to processing the Group Visa, you have two choices. The normal process requires four office days and needs the payment of USD 175 for U.S. citizens, while other nationalities need to make the payment between USD 70 and USD 170.

If you need it quicker, the express option is also available, which takes only 3 office days but it will set you back between USD 90 and USD 180 per person.

Kindly note that this Visa is granted for all group members, so you must all arrive in and depart from Tibet together.

Please remember that travel insurance for our Mt. Kailash tour by helicopter is mandatory and must remain active throughout the entire time of the trip.

The helicopter that we will use for this tour is only for transportation so if any rescue is needed in an emergency, you will be responsible for any associated costs.

We therefore suggest you wisely include coverage for rescue operations for elevations exceeding 5600 m, as well as medical expenses for injuries, lost luggage, and any potential flight delays or cancellations.
