Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lake trek is great teahouse trek known for the array of fascinating lakes in Gokyo valley and the soaring Cho La Pass in Khumbu region of Nepal. The trek defines the beauty of majestically daunting peaks, warm Sherpa people, age-old monasteries, UNESCO listed Sagarmatha National Park and of course the mighty Everest. It is the great alternative to classical Everest Base Camp trekking route. Trekking to Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lake also offers the captivating sight of Mt. Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, Ama-Dablam, Pumori and Tengboche Monastery – the largest monastery in Khumbu region.
Spending 2 nights at Kathmandu, we make a trans-Himalayan flight to Lukla, the starting point of the trek. We follow the Dudh Koshi River valley and climb up to Namche-Bazaar- the prosperous town in Khumbu region. A series of shorter walking day and 1 day halt at Namche allows safe acclimatization by the time we reach our teahouse at Gokyo beside magnificent Ngozumpa glacier. We make a pre-dawn climb to Gokyo Ri to admire the tantalizing 8,000+ peaks and sunrise over the snowy horizon.
From Gokyo, we hike via Phortse, Pangboche and Dingboche route. A good level of fitness and favorable weather is required to cross the Cho La Pass and join the main Everest trail near Lobuche. We continue to Gorakhshep and follow the rugged trail to Everest Base Camp. The climb to Kala Patthar at the foothill of Mt. Pumori Ri awards the best view of Mt. Everest and multiple snowy peaks. Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lake is prefect for passionate walker who have ability to walk for at least 6-7 hours a day in rough mountain terrain.
